What grade levels can use Multitudes?
Multitudes offers assessments for students in grades K-2 in both English and Spanish. However, many of our instructional resources are appropriate for students in upper elementary grades who need additional support to develop their literacy skills.
Can we screen using Multitudes more than once a year?
Multitudes is designed to be given to students once per year, per language. For example, a Spanish-English bilingual student might be screened once in Spanish and once in English in a given school year.
How do students interact with the Multitudes screener?
Multitudes is administered 1:1. Administrators should allow the Multitudes platform to lead the way and guide the student’s assessment experience. Depending on the screening task, administrators may need to mark responses as correct or incorrect, ensure students’ understanding of the directions, and/or provide prompts and encouragement. Our friendly cast of animated characters provides a fun and friendly assessment experience for students.
Can Multitudes be administered in an active classroom environment?
Multitudes is a reading assessment, so we recommend administering it in as quiet and distraction-free of an environment as possible. Be sure to utilize headphones if noise within the environment might distract a student from performing their best on the screener.
How will we select the appropriate screening language for each student?
The Multitudes Administration Manual provides guidance on selecting screener language(s). Use the Screener Language Matrix to determine the appropriate language(s) in which to screen, based on a child’s primary language and your school’s instructional model.
How much training do staff need to administer Multitudes effectively?
We recommend a minimum of one hour of training for seasoned assessment administrators, including reviewing Chapters 1-2 of the Multitudes Administration Manual and viewing demonstration videos of the Universal Screener tasks. For less experienced administrators, additional training is recommended to dive deeper into screener administration instructions and best practices. Training is also available on responding to results to support schools in leveraging screening data to make informed instructional decisions.
What are the technical requirements of running Multitudes?
Multitudes is a web-based application, featuring both child and test administrator interfaces. We require two internet-connected devices, one for the child and one for the test administrator, to use the Multitudes screener. We strongly recommend using the latest version of Chrome or Safari when accessing Multitudes. A good Wi-Fi connection is important to ensure Multitudes runs smoothly.
Does Multitudes identify Dyslexia or Developmental Language Disorder?
No. Multitudes is a screener, meaning that it identifies students whose current skills show that they are at risk for developing reading difficulties down the road without additional support. Students who screen as “support needed” on the Multitudes screener have been shown to have this risk. The goal is for educators to intervene early to prevent future reading struggles. No screener is a diagnostic tool. We must first observe how students respond to appropriate instruction and, if needed, targeted intervention to support their areas of need. Ultimately, a student must be thoroughly assessed by a qualified professional to receive a formal diagnosis of dyslexia, DLD, or another disability.
Multitudes user support is available every day during business hours.
