Understanding Multitudes
Every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader. Learn more about Multitudes and how it helps teachers and families support children's early reading development.
All children deserve the opportunity to become strong readers. Universal screening is an important first step toward this goal.
A universal screener is a series of brief activities that every student completes. It does not diagnose or label students. Instead, it helps teachers and families understand each child's strengths and learning needs early—even before formal reading instruction begins.
By identifying students who may need additional support early, schools can provide instruction at the right time.
Multitudes is a universal reading screener that helps identify early reading strengths and areas where a child may benefit from additional support.
A trained member of your school's staff administers Multitudes individually to each student.
The screening takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Multitudes measures knowledge and skills that research has shown are important for learning to read.
Depending on your child's grade level, the screening may include:
- Naming familiar objects
- Removing sounds from spoken words
- Identifying letter names and sounds
- Reading and spelling words
- Quickly naming familiar objects or letters
After screening, your child's school will provide you with a results report.
The report includes an overall screening result indicating whether your child is currently on track or may benefit from additional reading support.
You'll also receive scores for each part of the screening, helping you better understand your child's strengths and areas for growth.
